CT Information for Owners

Important CT information for Pet Owners

What is CT?

Computed Tomography (CT) is a form of advanced imaging that uses rotating x-rays and a computer to generate detailed images of the body in cross-section. These cross-sectional images can also be combined to create a detailed 3D image of certain areas of the body.

What is CT used for?

CT is useful whenever we wish to assess the structure of an organ or body part. This can be essential in allowing us to diagnose abnormalities that might be affecting your pet, and to form a treatment plan.

Examples include:

  • Ear disease
  • Nasal disease
  • Tumours
  • Fractures
  • Orthopaedic and spinal conditions

Is CT safe for pets?

CT scanners are incredibly safe and generally use low doses of radiation. The scanning process is very quick and usually takes between 10 and 40 minutes. In order to ensure that your pet stays still for the duration of the scan, they will usually need to undergo a short sedation or general anaesthetic. As with any anaesthetic, this is never completely without risk, but these risks are exceptionally low in modern veterinary practice. Your vet will always discuss any concerns you might have about your pet before going ahead with the CT scan.
