Laser Therapy

K-laser Class IV therapeutic lasers deliver specific red and near-infrared wavelengths of laser light to induce a photochemical reaction and therapeutic effect. Physiological effects include increased circulation, reduced inflammation, pain reduction and enhanced tissue healing.

During each painless treatment, laser energy increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen, and nutrients to the damaged area. This creates an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms, stiffness, and pain. As the injured area returns to normal, function is restored and pain is relieved.

During K-laser Therapy, infrared laser light interacts with tissues at the cellular level increasing metabolic activity within the cell. By improving the transport of nutrients across the cell membrane, the increased production of cellular energy (ATP) is stimulated. The cascade of beneficial effects that follows includes increased cellular function and tissue repair.

Specific conditions that could benefit from K-laser therapy:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Chronic pain
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Following orthopaedic surgery
  • Gingivitis
  • Wounds
  • Acute and chronic skin conditions
  • Abscesses
  • Burns
  • Aural haematoma
  • Asthma
  • Following surgery to speed up healing of incision
  • Osteoarthritis – the K-laser can be used as an alternative to or in conjunction with anti-inflammatory medications. It often allows animals already on anti-inflammatory medications to benefit from a dose reduction, meaning a reduced risk of unwanted side-effects.
  • Following orthopaedic surgery – the K-laser can be used to speed up the healing following an orthopaedic surgery resulting in a more rapid recovery time
  • Following surgery – the K-laser can speed up the healing of the surgical incision following an operation. This results in less time wearing the buster collar and a quicker return to full fitness.

The K-laser Treatments

The K-laser treatment is carried out by one of our Registered Veterinary Nurses after being recommended and referred by a vet.

The number of treatments required will depend on the reason for the K-laser being prescribed. For arthritis and gingivitis we usually recommend two treatments a week for three weeks. For acute injuries or wounds we normally recommend using the K-laser on alternate days until the problem has resolved.
